Web Desk: Samsung Electronics has introduced the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold, its first smartphone with a triple-fold design, marking a major step in the company’s effort to maintain its lead in the premium foldable market amid intensifying global competition.

Global Launch Begins Dec. 12

The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold will reach stores in South Korea on December 12, with rollouts planned in China, Taiwan, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates soon after, Samsung said. The device is expected to arrive in the United States in the first quarter of 2026.

The phone will be offered in a single black variant with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. It is priced at 3.59 million won ($2,449).

Triple-Hinge Design Unfolds to a 10-Inch Display

The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold uses two inward-folding hinges that open into a 10-inch display with a 2160 x 1584 resolution. When folded, the handset measures 12.9 mm thick, making it slightly bulkier than the Galaxy Z Fold six but slimmer than several earlier-generation foldables.

The device’s three-panel layout supports running three apps vertically in parallel, while a desktop-style workspace can be activated without a monitor. Samsung says the phone carries the largest battery ever fitted to one of its foldables and can reach 50 percent charge in about 30 minutes.

Limited Units Designed to Showcase Technology

Despite the high-profile launch, analysts expect the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold to ship in small quantities. Counterpoint Research said the model is meant to demonstrate Samsung’s engineering capabilities rather than compete at scale.

“With expectations that Apple may enter the foldable category in 2026, Samsung is using this device to reinforce its technology leadership,” said Liz Lee, an analyst at Counterpoint. She added that the TriFold will help Samsung evaluate hinge durability, software behavior and long-term user patterns ahead of broader commercialization.

Samsung Aims for Productivity and AI Integration

TM Roh, Samsung’s recently appointed co-CEO and head of the Device eXperience division, said the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold is the result of years of work on multi-fold mechanisms and is designed to combine portability, performance and productivity in one device.

The phone includes Galaxy AI tools such as generative photo editing, large-screen browsing assistance and real-time multimodal responses through Gemini Live. A standalone version of Samsung DeX allows users to build a full work environment on the device, including multi-window setups and extended-screen use with an external monitor.

Competitive Pressures Build

Samsung introduced its first foldable smartphone in 2019 but has since faced increasing pressure from Chinese manufacturers, including Huawei and Honor, which have launched competing multi-fold models. Analysts expect Apple to challenge Samsung’s lead in the segment as early as next year.

The TriFold carries an IP48 rating water-resistant to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes but provides only limited dust protection.

Repair Program Introduced as Costs Remain Unclear

To ease concerns about repair expenses, Samsung is offering Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold buyers a one-time 50 percent discount on display repairs. However, the company has not confirmed whether the offer includes the main foldable panel, which is believed to be the device’s most expensive component.

Availability

The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold will be available in select retail locations for hands-on demonstrations when sales begin. Early buyers will also receive a six-month Google AI Pro subscription with 2TB of cloud storage.
