Tesla CEO Elon Musk has unveiled a vehicle that he claims is capable of flying.
According to media reports, Musk introduced the company’s new Roadster at a Tesla event in Texas.
The two-seat sports car can reportedly accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than a second. It can also travel on extremely steep roads and land upside down using an air jet.
During the demonstration, there was no driver inside the vehicle.
Musk said no driver was seated in the car to prevent anyone from being killed in an accident during testing.
“There is no guarantee of success. I mean, it might be able to do what we are claiming, but even if it doesn’t, we are at a safe distance,” he said.
In a subsequent demonstration, the Roadster was shown flying over other Tesla vehicles using the same air-jet system.
However, it remains unclear whether the feature will work reliably when drivers use it in real-world conditions.
The vehicle uses 10 nozzles, which Musk described as ultra-high-pressure air tanks, to enable it to hover or gain speed.
Musk said the vehicle was the result of a collaboration between the world’s best car manufacturer and the world’s best rocket company.
He announced that production of the vehicle would begin in 2028.
However, it remains uncertain whether the car can genuinely fly, as the tests did not demonstrate sustained flight.
