Web Desk: Lahore has moved a step closer to reviving its traditional Basant festival in 2027, with the deputy commissioner proposing that the event be held from March 12 to 14.
The deputy commissioner’s office has submitted a summary to the Punjab government outlining the proposed dates. The Punjab Cabinet will make the final decision on whether the festival goes ahead on those dates.
The proposal sets out a phased schedule for the manufacture, sale and use of kites and kite strings ahead of the three-day celebration.
Under the proposed schedule, authorities would allow the purchase, transportation and storage of kites and kite strings from Feb. 1, 2027.
Sales to the general public would begin nine days later, on Feb. 10, according to sources at the deputy commissioner’s office.
Manufacturing of kites and kite strings would remain permitted until March 14, the final day of the proposed Basant celebrations.
The proposal would permit kite flying across Lahore district, except in designated prohibited areas.
However, participants would have to comply with rules governing the materials used for kites and kite strings. The restrictions are intended to regulate the activity while allowing residents to take part in the traditional festival.
The proposed framework would therefore introduce specific dates for each stage of the kite-related activities rather than allowing unrestricted sales and use.
The proposed March dates and associated arrangements remain subject to approval by the Punjab Cabinet.
If approved, the plan would provide Lahore residents with a defined schedule for kite-related activities leading up to the three-day Basant celebration, while keeping kite flying subject to restrictions in prohibited areas and requirements on permitted materials.
