WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new feature for Android users that allows them to view status updates at double speed, enabling them to watch statuses in half the time.

According to technology reports, the feature has been spotted in WhatsApp’s Android beta version 2.26.40.4 on the Google Play Store. The facility is currently available to some beta users, while access is expected to expand to more users in the coming weeks.

To use the new feature, users will need to press and hold the right side of the status screen. This will immediately double the playback speed. Once the finger is lifted, the speed will return to normal.

The increased playback speed will remain active only while users press and hold the screen, and the feature can be used repeatedly while viewing different status updates. Users will not need to change any permanent settings to use it.

According to reports, status updates containing audio can last up to 30 seconds, meaning that viewing statuses from a large number of contacts can take considerable time. The new feature will allow users to view more status updates in less time.

Reports of the feature being introduced for iPhone users also emerged last month, while its rollout for Android users has now begun.
