England set ODI record with 342 run win at Southampton

⏱ 2 minute read
England ODI win

England delivered a historic thrashing, crushing South Africa by 342 runs in the final ODI at Southampton.

This monumental margin now stands as the largest victory by runs in men’s ODI history, surpassing India’s 317-run rout of Sri Lanka in 2023.

Although South Africa had already secured the series 2-1, England’s commanding performance ensured they avoided a whitewash in spectacular fashion.

Batting blitz by England sets up 414

Electing to bat first, England stormed to 100 in just 13.4 overs, setting an electrifying pace. Jamie Smith’s fluent 62 off 48 balls featured clean strokes through the arc, while Ben Duckett contributed a steady 31 to lay a solid foundation.

This platform allowed Joe Root and Jacob Bethell to dominate, forging a formidable 182-run partnership. Root’s composed 19th ODI hundred showcased his trademark control, while Bethell, at just 21, blasted his maiden international century with 110 off 82 balls, becoming England’s second-youngest men’s ODI centurion.

Jos Buttler’s explosive 62 off 32 sealed the innings, propelling England to an imposing 414 and igniting the crowd’s anticipation of a record-breaking day.

Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse opening thrust against South Africa

England’s new-ball duo, Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse, unleashed havoc, reducing South Africa to three wickets down within the first three overs.

The relentless pressure continued, leaving the visitors at a dire 24 for 6 by the end of the powerplay. A brief 20-run stand between Corbin Bosch and Keshav Maharaj offered momentary resistance, but Adil Rashid’s spin dismantled the tail.

South Africa’s chase collapsed well short, confirming England’s record-shattering margin of victory.

First series win since 1988

Despite this crushing defeat, South Africa celebrated their first ODI series win in England since 1998, bolstered by a 2-1 series triumph in Australia the previous month.

England, meanwhile, drew confidence from their comprehensive display of batting and bowling prowess.
