Major relief for electricity consumers ends in August

The first phase of setting a new base electricity tariff will begin on January 1, 2027. The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted an application to NEPRA to determine electricity purchase prices, proposing six possible tariffs.

The agency has proposed purchasing electricity worth at least Rs3,386.86 billion from January to December 2027. The estimated electricity purchase price for this period is Rs25.88 per unit.

Under the worst-case scenario outlined in the application, the estimated electricity purchase price could reach Rs29.25 per unit. Capacity payments under the power purchase price are estimated to be at least Rs1,914.44 billion, while the maximum estimate stands at Rs1,962 billion.

NEPRA has announced that it will hold a hearing on the CPPA’s application on November 3. The estimated cost of electricity purchases for the current year, from January to December 2026, stands at Rs3,185 billion.

The electricity purchase price for the current year is Rs25.32 per unit. Capacity payments are estimated at Rs1,923.31 billion by December 2026, with per-unit capacity payments for January to December 2026 estimated at Rs14.86.

The final decision on the electricity purchase tariff for January to December 2027 will be made by NEPRA after the hearing.
