Web Desk: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has proposed a substantial security allowance for police personnel serving in high-risk areas, with payments ranging from 75% to 120% of basic salary, according to a summary sent to the provincial governor.

The proposal aims to provide additional financial support to police officers and personnel working under difficult security conditions, particularly in terrorism-affected and merged districts.

Under the proposal, police personnel deployed in southern districts and the merged tribal districts would receive a security challenge allowance equal to 120% of their basic salary.

Police personnel serving in other settled districts would be eligible for an allowance equivalent to 100% of their basic salary, while those posted in the Hazara region would receive 75%, according to the summary.

The proposal has been forwarded to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi for consideration. However, the allowances will only take effect after the relevant authorities approve the proposal and determine the implementation mechanism.

The proposed allowance would require more than 5.15 billion rupees in additional monthly expenditure, reflecting the scale of the financial commitment involved.

The government has cited the security risks faced by police personnel as a key justification for the proposed payments. Officials argue that the additional allowance would provide financial relief to personnel deployed in areas where they face heightened threats while carrying out their duties.

The summary highlights the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police’s role in combating terrorism over the past three decades.

Police personnel have continued to maintain law and order and respond to security incidents despite operating in high-risk environments. Many officers and personnel have also lost their lives while performing their duties during the province’s prolonged struggle against terrorism.

The proposal also points to a disparity between police salaries in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and those in other provinces, arguing that the additional allowance would help address some of the financial pressures faced by provincial police personnel.

The proposed allowance could provide significant financial relief to police personnel if approved. However, the summary does not constitute a final decision, and the government must still approve the rates, funding and mechanism for disbursing the payments.

The move comes as security challenges continue to place additional demands on police forces across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly in districts exposed to persistent security threats.
