54 Rooms in 18 KP Government Schools at Risk of Collapse

An inspection of government school buildings following a school roof collapse has revealed that 54 rooms in 18 government schools across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are in extremely dilapidated condition and could collapse at any time, potentially causing a major tragedy. Six other schools have buildings that are entirely unfit for use.

Thirty-four people, including 33 students, were killed when the roof of a private school collapsed in Peshawar’s Dehri Colony. Following the incident, the Education Department ordered inspections of government school buildings across the province.

According to reports, preliminary information from the Education Department indicates that 54 rooms in 18 government schools in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have deteriorated severely and could collapse at any time, posing the risk of a major tragedy. In addition, six schools in various districts have buildings that are completely unfit for use.

According to the Education Department, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has more than 34,000 government schools, with over six million children enrolled.

Inspections of all public and private school buildings are scheduled to be completed by October 26. Following the completion of the inspections, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government will announce a special package for the rehabilitation and repair of affected schools.

It is an irony of the fact that PTI had two basic slogans to deceive people with. One amongst them was working on education on emergency basis to reform it and to provide basic infrastructure and needs of education to the students of the province. But unluckily this area is the most affected one in comparison to all others. The buildings and education standard in the province present a very bleak and depressing picture. Govt schools have become death traps for the kids.

However, the present set up has devised a comprehensive mechanism to inspect all govt schools and to restore them wherever needed, giving a ray of hope and satisfaction to the poor parents.
