Web Desk: Cryptocurrency entrepreneur Do Kwon is due to be sentenced today in Manhattan, where he admitted to misleading investors who suffered massive losses after the collapse of his digital-asset empire in 2022. He pleaded guilty in August to federal fraud charges linked to the downfall of Terraform Labs, the blockchain company he co-founded.

Background to Terraform’s Crash

Terraform Labs once promoted its TerraUSD token as a dependable stablecoin designed to hold its value against traditional assets. However, U.S. prosecutors say the product’s stability was a facade that eventually unraveled, wiping out billions in market value and sending shockwaves across global crypto markets. The implosion erased roughly $40 billion tied to TerraUSD and its companion token, Luna.

Prosecutors Push for 12-Year Term

Although federal guidelines point to a prison sentence of about 25 years, prosecutors have urged the court to impose a 12-year term. They noted Kwon’s guilty plea, his exposure to additional charges in South Korea, and the time he already served in Montenegro while fighting extradition. In their filing, prosecutors said Kwon orchestrated a sweeping deception that touched nearly every element of Terraform’s operations and left investors facing severe financial losses.

Defense Seeks Leniency

Kwon’s legal team has pressed for a sentence capped at five years. They argued his decisions were driven by overconfidence and pressure rather than personal gain. In a letter to the judge, Kwon acknowledged responsibility, writing that he misled the community and now deeply regrets the choices that led to the company’s downfall.

Global Fallout and Extradition

Investigators say investors around the world were hit by the collapse of the Singapore-based firm, founded in 2018. TerraUSD’s dramatic break from its $1 peg triggered a broader market rout and marked one of the largest failures in the cryptocurrency sector. Kwon was eventually extradited to the United States after being detained in Montenegro in March 2023 for using a falsified passport while traveling in Europe.
