Web Desk: Actor Jamal Shah has rejected allegations of domestic abuse made by his former wife and actress Faryal Gohar, saying the claims about their marriage are untrue.
The dispute has drawn renewed public attention to the former celebrity couple, whose marriage in the 1980s and subsequent divorce in the early 1990s once attracted considerable attention in Pakistan’s entertainment industry.
Gohar recently discussed the marriage during an appearance on the television programme Good Morning Pakistan, where she alleged that she had suffered physical abuse during the relationship.
She said she had been assaulted with belts and linked the violence to pregnancy losses. According to Gohar, the loss of a twin pregnancy ultimately contributed to her decision to end the marriage.
Responding to the allegations in an interview with Ammar Masood, Shah denied that he had subjected Gohar to domestic violence.
The actor said he had previously avoided publicly discussing the breakdown of their marriage because he did not want the dispute to turn into a public exchange of accusations.
Shah also rejected the suggestion that he held misogynistic views and described the allegations of repeated miscarriages as inaccurate.
Regarding pregnancy loss, he said the couple had lost one baby and offered a different account of the circumstances. Shah claimed Gohar had suffered injuries after being attacked and bitten by a dog, which he said resulted in the miscarriage.
The competing accounts have not been independently established in the information available.
Shah also indicated that he did not intend to pursue a defamation lawsuit against Gohar.
He said taking legal action would primarily result in financial compensation, something he said he did not need. Instead, he suggested that the reputational damage from the allegations had already occurred.
The comments have now brought renewed scrutiny to a relationship that ended decades ago but continues to attract public interest.
Meanwhile, reactions online have been mixed, with some social media users questioning Shah’s account while others have called for caution before reaching conclusions.
Some commenters referred to reports that circulated around the time of the couple’s divorce, while others expressed support for Gohar and argued that allegations of abuse should be taken seriously.
The renewed debate highlights how claims about high-profile relationships can resurface years later, particularly when former partners offer sharply different accounts of events.
Neither side’s allegations have been independently verified based on the information currently available, leaving the public dispute centered on the conflicting accounts provided by the two former spouses.
