The trailer for Christy, a biopic on boxing legend Christy Martin, recently released. Fans saw Sydney Sweeney in a powerful and gritty look as the famed boxer. The trailer created a buzz and renewed public interest in Christy Martin, famously known as “The Coal Miner’s Daughter.”
Christy Martin was born on June 12, 1968, in West Virginia, in a coal miner family. Her father, grandfather, and brother all worked in the mines, which gave her the nickname “The Coal Miner’s Daughter.” She embraced it and became a pioneer in women’s boxing in the United States.
Christy excelled in baseball and basketball as a child. She earned a basketball scholarship and joined college. Her entry into boxing came by chance. She entered a local Toughwoman competition in West Virginia to win a dare from friends. Despite having no training, she won her first match. This win pushed her to join more contests and pursue a professional boxing career.
Christy trained under coach Jim Martin, who later became her husband. They married in 1991 when Christy was 22 and Jim was 47. Their marriage quickly turned toxic.
Christy later said Jim emotionally and physically abused her. She claimed he fueled her drug addiction to control her and spent her prize money on his lavish lifestyle. She shared these details in her memoir Fighting for Survival.
Christy also revealed that she knew she was a lesbian from a young age. In high school, she had a relationship with her basketball teammate, Sherry Lusk. After reconnecting with Sherry in 2010, Christy decided to leave Jim.
Surviving a Brutal Attack
Jim reacted with violence when Christy told him she wanted a divorce. Reports say he stabbed her several times and shot her before fleeing.
Christy survived the attack and rebuilt her life. Police arrested Jim, and a court sentenced him to 25 years in prison for attempted murder. He stayed in prison until his death in 2024. Christy’s survival inspired many and showed her unmatched resilience.
Finding Love Again with Lisa Holewyne
Christy later found love with former boxing rival Lisa Holewyne. They first met in 2001 when Christy defeated Lisa in a preliminary bout before the Hasim Rahman vs. Lennox Lewis heavyweight match.
Christy and Lisa married on November 25, 2017. They have stayed together since and continue to support each other.
