Web desk: The death toll from the recent floods in Punjab has risen to 97, while the total number of affected people has reached 4.59 million, according to a detailed report issued by the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
Over 4,500 villages submerged by Ravi, Sutlej, Chenab floods
Relief Commissioner Punjab, Nabeel Javed, said that more than 4,500 villages have been hit by severe flooding caused by the overflowing Ravi, Sutlej and Chenab rivers. Of these, 2,335 villages were submerged along the Chenab, 1,482 along the Ravi, and 672 along the Sutlej.
2.45 million evacuated; relief, medical camps established
The report noted that timely rescue operations ensured the safe evacuation of over 2.45 million people from flood-hit areas. To support the displaced, 396 relief camps and 490 medical camps have been set up. Additionally, 405 veterinary camps are operating to care for livestock, with more than 1.9 million animals moved to safer places.
Water levels in dams near danger point
Meanwhile, water levels at major reservoirs remain a concern. Mangla Dam is now at 93 per cent capacity, while Tarbela has reached its maximum storage. Across the border in India, Bhakra Dam on the Sutlej is filled to 88 per cent, Pong Dam to 94 per cent, and Thein Dam to 89 per cent.
Punjab government promises compensation, faster relief efforts
The Punjab government has assured that compensation will be provided for human and material losses, and that relief operations will be further intensified in the coming days.
