PTA urged WhatsApp users

Islamabad: PTA urged WhatsApp users to remain vigilant against hacking and cyber fraud, warning that scammers are increasingly exploiting social engineering tactics to steal personal and financial information.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said fraudsters are targeting unsuspecting users through deceptive calls and messages, often posing as trusted individuals or service providers.

Scammers exploit trust through social engineering

According to the PTA, cybercriminals commonly lure victims by manipulating them into sharing sensitive details, including personal information and one-time password (OTP) codes sent to their mobile phones.

Once obtained, the information is then used for financial fraud, the regulator said.

Moreover, scammers frequently impersonate courier service representatives to trick users into revealing OTP codes, enabling unauthorized access to WhatsApp accounts.

Fake emergency calls raise alarm

In addition, the PTA warned of fraudulent calls in which scammers claim that a relative has been detained by police, pressuring victims to act quickly without verification.

Such tactics are designed to create panic and bypass rational decision-making, the authority said.

Advice to users to prevent losses

To reduce the risk of financial loss, the PTA advised users not to share OTP codes or personal details under any circumstances.

The regulator also urged consumers to avoid transferring money without proper verification, stressing that caution remains the most effective defense against cyber fraud.
