Islamabad: Former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s recent medical examination and treatment were deliberately turned into a political controversy, even though doctors representing his own party — including his personal physician — had expressed complete satisfaction.
According to sources, Imran Khan’s personal doctor from Shaukat Khanum Hospital was so satisfied with the examination and treatment that one of them told the examining doctors, “You have done an excellent job.”
However, an opposition source said that Aleema Khan was unhappy with the overall situation.
Sources reveal that two doctors from PIMS Hospital, along with PTI-nominated doctor Dr. Nadeem Qureshi, conducted a detailed medical examination of the jailed PTI chairman at Adiala Jail.
After the examination, senior opposition leaders, including Allama Raja Nasir Abbas and Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, were briefed at PIMS. A 45-minute speakerphone consultation was also arranged between the examining doctors and two doctors from Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital — Dr. Khurram Mirza and Dr. Asim Yousaf — who are considered trusted by Imran Khan and his family.
Sources say several participants listened to the entire discussion, and a formal record was prepared, which both sides possess. During the call, Shaukat Khanum doctors reportedly expressed full satisfaction with the examination and treatment procedure.
According to documented points, PTI-affiliated doctors from Lahore described the treatment as “encouraging and satisfactory,” calling it “textbook examination and treatment.” They also appreciated the medical team and congratulated them for handling the case successfully.
Dr. Asim Yousaf thanked the medical team “on behalf of Imran Khan’s family” and assured that there would be no criticism of future medical arrangements.
Sources say PTI doctors raised several questions and, with the patient’s consent, were given access to medical summaries, test reports, and treatment records. All aspects of Imran Khan’s health were discussed in detail, including a slight increase in cholesterol levels.
When asked about recommendations, PTI’s nominated doctors reportedly stated that no immediate intervention was needed and that the situation could be reviewed during the next examination.
A senior PIMS doctor, Dr. Arif, expressed regret that earlier claims had been made publicly suggesting that Imran Khan was not receiving proper specialist treatment. He stated that he has administered similar injections to over 1,000 patients and has extensive experience.
Sources add that PTI members and parliamentarians privately described the situation as “satisfactory.”
However, the next morning the situation took a dramatic turn when Dr. Asim Yousaf released a video message stating that he could neither confirm nor deny certain details because he had not personally examined Imran Khan. This created ambiguity regarding the medical review.
Despite earlier reports of satisfaction during consultations, PTI sources say protest and sit-in planning continued. Several senior opposition leaders, including Mahmood Khan Achakzai, were aware of the doctors’ assessment.
Sources confirm that Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan did not play a positive role in softening the situation; instead, she reportedly urged doctors and opposition leaders to maintain a tough stance. When some leaders expressed satisfaction with the medical results, it was said to have displeased her.
During a protest sit-in, tension became visible when Aleema Khan and her sisters reportedly avoided the traditional reception of opposition leaders, allegedly because of this issue.
Although the documented record reflects medical satisfaction, conflicting public statements from some party members or family members have fueled uncertainty and mistrust.
