Web Desk: US President Donald Trump has praised Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as a “great leader” while again highlighting his administration’s claimed role in helping end the military confrontation between Pakistan and India in May 2025.
Trump has repeatedly said he intervened diplomatically during the crisis and used pressure on both countries to help halt the fighting. The White House has subsequently listed the Pakistan-India conflict among disputes it says Trump helped bring to an end.
Trump has said his intervention helped prevent the conflict from escalating further and has claimed that millions of lives were saved as a result.
The confrontation involved several days of military exchanges between the two nuclear-armed neighbours before Pakistan and India agreed to stop fighting in May 2025.
Pakistan has also publicly credited Trump with helping facilitate the ceasefire. However, the role of US diplomacy has been described differently by the countries involved, and Trump’s assessment of the number of lives saved is his own claim.
Trump has also spoken positively about Shehbaz’s leadership, describing the Pakistani prime minister as a “great leader.”
The comments echo remarks Trump made ahead of his September 2025 meeting with Shehbaz and Field Marshal Asim Munir. The White House records show that Trump met the two Pakistani leaders in the Oval Office on Sept. 25, 2025.
Trump had previously praised both Pakistani leaders, calling them “great” while discussing their planned White House meeting.
The remarks come as the Trump administration continues to cite the Pakistan-India ceasefire as part of its broader record of diplomatic engagement.
The White House has repeatedly identified the May 2025 ceasefire as an outcome of Trump’s efforts, while Pakistan has acknowledged his involvement in bringing the two sides toward a halt in hostilities.
The precise contribution of the various diplomatic channels involved in securing the ceasefire remains a matter of differing accounts by the governments concerned.
