A legal complaint has been filed against Indian cricket team all-rounder Hardik Pandya over the alleged disrespect of the national flag.

According to Indian media, the complaint was filed by a lawyer from Pune, Wajid Khan, who said he has formally requested police to take action in the matter.
Khan stated that he watched a video in which Pandya was celebrating after winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

He said that during the celebration, Pandya was seen dancing in a romantic manner with his girlfriend while the Indian national flag was wrapped around his back.
According to Khan, celebrating with the national flag wrapped around the body goes against the dignity of the flag.

He added that under Section 2 of the National Flag Act 1971, respect for the national flag must be ensured and any act that may be considered disrespectful is not permitted.

Khan said he went to the Shivaji Nagar Police Station to file the complaint. Initially, the police said the incident did not occur in their jurisdiction, but he argued that the national flag represents the entire country, therefore the complaint can be filed anywhere.

He added that the police eventually accepted his complaint and provided him with a copy. Further action in the case is now awaited.
