Details have emerged regarding which items are prohibited from being taken to Saudi Arabia.
According to a message issued by the Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment, strict rules and regulations apply to passengers’ baggage when entering Saudi Arabia, which are enforced by the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA).
Prohibited items include narcotic drugs and alcohol, counterfeit currency, weapons and ammunition, fireworks (firecrackers), and electronic devices used for surveillance or covert recording, such as hidden cameras or listening devices. In addition, some items considered contrary to public morals or the country’s laws are also prohibited, including certain books, digital storage devices, unregistered medicines and some agricultural products such as nutmeg. Laser devices and electric shock devices are also subject to restrictions because they may pose concerns related to public safety.
These rules have been enforced under Saudi Ministry of Finance Decision No. 2597 (24 Rajab 1439 AH) and Customs Circular No. 340/21M. Under these laws, customs authorities have the power to search for and confiscate any prohibited or illegal items and take legal action in case of violations.
Anyone who violates these rules may face fines, immediate confiscation of the items and, in some cases, further legal action.
Authorities advise passengers to check the official Saudi Customs guidelines before travelling and clearly declare everything contained in their baggage. It is necessary to avoid carrying any suspicious or prohibited items, as even a minor mistake can lead to serious difficulties.
