Web Desk: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has formally registered two popular social media and live-streaming platforms, Bigo Live and Likee, in a move aimed at strengthening oversight of online content and ensuring compliance with the country’s digital regulations.
According to a statement issued by the telecom regulator, both platforms have completed their registration under Bigo Service Pakistan Private Limited, establishing a formal regulatory framework for their operations in the country.
The development marks another step in Pakistan’s efforts to improve cooperation between digital platforms and regulatory authorities while addressing concerns over unlawful online content.
The PTA said the registration process was completed in accordance with the Removal and Blocking of Unlawful Online Content (Procedure, Oversight and Safeguards) Rules, 2021, and the applicable constitutional framework.
A spokesperson for the authority said the registration would help strengthen mechanisms for monitoring online content and improving coordination with the platforms.
Furthermore, the regulator emphasised that the initiative aims to promote compliance with Pakistani laws while encouraging responsible use of social media services.
The registration also provides a formal basis for engagement between the PTA and the companies on matters involving online content regulation.
Following the registration, the PTA expects closer cooperation with Bigo Live and Likee in addressing regulatory requirements and improving the effectiveness of online content oversight.
Officials said the move would facilitate communication between the authority and the platforms, particularly in matters concerning potentially unlawful digital content.
Moreover, the PTA maintained that constructive engagement with technology companies remains essential to ensuring a safer and more accountable online environment.
The authority said its approach focuses on improving regulatory coordination rather than relying solely on enforcement measures.
The registration comes as Pakistan continues to strengthen its regulatory framework for social media companies and online content providers.
Under the country’s existing rules, digital platforms are required to comply with applicable legal obligations concerning unlawful online material.
The PTA said formal engagement with registered platforms would support more effective implementation of these requirements.
Additionally, the regulator expects the arrangement to encourage greater accountability and responsible platform management.
Meanwhile, the telecom authority reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining constructive relationships with digital platforms operating in Pakistan.
It said transparency, effective communication and positive cooperation would remain central to its regulatory strategy.
The PTA also stressed the importance of working with technology companies to improve online content monitoring while ensuring compliance with domestic laws.
With Bigo Live and Likee now formally registered, the authority expects stronger institutional coordination with the two platforms.
However, the statement did not announce any immediate changes to how Pakistani users access or use either service.
The registration represents a further development in Pakistan’s evolving digital regulatory landscape as authorities seek closer engagement with major social media and live-streaming companies.
