WhatsApp has introduced a new feature for user convenience, allowing users to interact with information found within messages. By clicking on specific content, users can call or save phone numbers, add dates and times to their calendars, and open addresses directly in map applications.
This new feature is called “Message Text Actions.” When relevant information appears in a message, a dotted line will be displayed beneath it; clicking this line will reveal the available options.
For phone numbers, users can choose to copy the number, save it to their contacts, or initiate a call. Dates and times can be added to a mobile calendar or used to schedule an event directly within WhatsApp.
Similarly, addresses found in messages can be copied or opened in a map application, while email addresses can be copied or opened in the user’s mobile email app.
According to the technology website “WABetaInfo,” this feature works for both received and sent messages. Users also have the option to provide feedback on the suggestions offered or to report any instances where information was incorrectly identified.
WhatsApp states that the identification of information within messages takes place locally on the user’s mobile device. The content of the messages is not sent to the company’s servers for this purpose, ensuring that end-to-end encryption remains intact.
This feature is currently being rolled out in stages to select users running the latest versions of WhatsApp on Android and iOS. While a specific date for a full release to all users has not been announced, the feature is expected to become available to more users in the coming weeks.
