Web Desk: Apple is adding Google-developed SynthID technology to images generated through Image Playground and to images that undergo significant editing with Apple Intelligence.
The hidden watermark is designed to help identify content that has been generated or substantially altered using AI, while remaining invisible during normal viewing.
The move comes as technology companies face growing pressure to make AI-generated content easier to identify and distinguish from conventional photographs and other digital media.
The watermarking system uses SynthID, a technology developed by Google to embed an imperceptible identifier into AI-generated content.
Because the mark is hidden within the image, users are not expected to see a visible logo or label when viewing the picture normally. Instead, the technology can help establish whether an image contains AI-generated or heavily AI-edited elements.
Apple’s adoption of SynthID also highlights growing cooperation between major technology companies around tools designed to improve transparency in AI-generated media.
Importantly, the new system does not mean that every image taken with an iPhone will automatically receive an AI watermark.
Normal photographs captured with an iPhone camera and left unedited do not receive the AI mark simply because they were taken on an Apple device.
