Web Desk: The Rawalpindi-Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ) has strongly condemned alleged threats and harassment targeting the chief executive officer of Azaad Digital and his family, calling on the government and law enforcement agencies to take immediate action.
In a press statement, the journalists’ body described the reported threats, intimidation and social media harassment as attacks on press freedom, fundamental rights and democratic values.
The union urged authorities to investigate the matter and identify those allegedly involved in the campaign against the journalist and his family.
The RIUJ called on Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and other relevant authorities to take notice of the allegations.
It also demanded a transparent and impartial investigation into the social media accounts allegedly involved in spreading threats and intimidation.
The union said investigators should examine the individuals operating those accounts and take legal action against anyone found responsible on the basis of evidence.
RIUJ President Tariq Usmani said threatening journalists and their families for carrying out professional duties was unacceptable.
He stressed that journalists must be able to perform their work without fear, pressure or intimidation. He also called on the government and relevant institutions to ensure the safety of the affected journalist and his family.
General Secretary Rizwan Ghilizai and other office-bearers also condemned the alleged harassment, saying disagreements with journalistic reporting should be addressed through legal channels rather than threats or intimidation.
