Rachel, a 24-year-old former college athlete, died suddenly during the New York City Marathon in America. She was participating in her first marathon and collapsed suddenly while running in Central Park about two miles from the finish line.
Immediately after the incident, the people present tried to provide him with medical aid. A social worker checked his pulse, but when there was no pulse, two doctors in the audience took turns to start CPR. Later, Marathon’s medical team arrived at the scene with a defibrillator.
Rachel was immediately rushed to a medical center where doctors tried to save her life for six hours but could not revive her. According to his father Steve Apa, doctors confirmed his death at 9:40 pm.
According to the father, doctors gave the cause of death as Rhabdomyolysis, which is a rare medical condition. In this disease, the muscle tissue starts to break down rapidly, as a result of which harmful substances can enter the blood and affect the vital organs of the body.
Rachel’s father expressed his deep sorrow, saying that his daughter was completely healthy and in excellent physical condition, so this tragedy is unbelievable for him.
Rachel was also texting her father on her mobile phone during the race. His last message was received on mail 23 in which he wrote ‘last step’.
Rachel’s mother, Michelle, was also in New York and posted a video of her smiling daughter on Mile 14. Later, as she was trying to get to Central Park, she learned through a marathon tracking app that her daughter’s location had stopped at mile 24. They arrived at the scene when Rachel was being taken to the hospital.
Rachel Appa was a graduate of Bucknell University and ran the marathon in memory of her late grandfather. His grandfather died of Parkinson’s disease in 2022. Rachel was raising funds for the Parkinson’s Foundation’s Champions Program through the race.
She was working as a product manager in an electrical component manufacturing company while also pursuing an MBA from Charleston Southern University.
According to the New York Road Runners, this is the first fatality of a participant during the New York City Marathon since 2024.
