Leg-Spinner Ben White Retires from Cricket at 28

Ireland leg-spinner Ben White has announced his retirement from professional cricket at the age of 28, revealing that he has taken up a job at a software development company.

According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, White last represented Ireland in an international match in December last year. He played 43 international matches across all three formats.

White made his international debut in July 2021 and was regarded as a promising leg-spinner for Ireland.

He took 36 wickets in 38 T20 internationals and was part of Ireland’s squads for the 2021, 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups. However, he played only three matches across the three tournaments. His opportunities in the longer formats were also limited.

In 2023, White played two One-Day Internationals and three Test matches. He took three wickets on his Test debut against Bangladesh but was less successful in his next two Tests against Sri Lanka.

In a message on social media, White said representing Ireland, playing in all three formats and featuring in three World Cups would remain a source of pride for him.

He thanked Cricket Ireland for the memorable experiences, valuable lessons and lifelong friendships he gained during his career.

Ireland head coach Gary Wilson praised White’s contribution, saying he would be particularly remembered for his performances in T20 cricket.
