Pakistan and India are highly likely to be placed in the same group for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 due to commercial reasons, while the official tournament schedule will be announced tomorrow in Cape Town at 9 PM Pakistan time.
According to a report by Indian media platform “RevSports”, ICC’s commercial partners and broadcasters consider the Pakistan-India match the biggest financial attraction of the tournament.
This is why broadcasters have reportedly insisted on ensuring that the two teams face each other during the group stage. Broadcasters believe that matches between these two cricketing rivals not only attract record-breaking viewership during ICC events but also significantly increase the overall commercial value of the tournament.
Hosting, Dates and Qualification Format
The next World Cup will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe from October 2 to November 21, 2027.
A total of 14 teams will participate in the tournament. The top eight teams in the ODI rankings will qualify directly.
Although Bangladesh is currently ranked ninth, it is expected to secure direct qualification because South Africa, which is ranked third, has already qualified as the host nation.
Three-Stage Tournament Format and New ‘Super 7’ System
The 2027 World Cup will be divided into three major stages before the semi-finals and final.
In the first stage, the three lower-ranked teams will compete in a “Super Series”, and the team that performs best in the round-robin matches will advance to the next stage.
In the second stage, the remaining 12 teams will be divided into two groups of six. A total of 30 matches will be played. The top three teams from each group, along with the best-performing fourth-ranked team overall, will qualify for the “Super 7” stage.
In the Super 7 round, teams will play 21 matches, after which the top four teams will qualify for the semi-finals.
In the semi-finals, the team finishing first will face the fourth-placed team, while the second-placed team will compete against the third-placed team. The winners will then meet in the final.
Pakistan-India ODI Rivalry
Looking at the recent history of 50-over ICC events between Pakistan and India, Pakistan’s record against its traditional rival has not been very impressive.
Pakistan’s last ODI victory over India came in the June 2017 Champions Trophy final, when Pakistan defeated India in a historic match. Since then, Pakistan has failed to beat India in 50-over cricket.
Despite this, clashes between the two teams remain among the most-watched sporting events in the world.
Balance Between Cricket and Commercial Interests
The new World Cup format and the expected Pakistan-India clash show how the ICC is trying to balance competitive cricket with commercial interests.
