The Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court, while hearing a case concerning the non-payment of scholarship funds to students of the University of Peshawar, remarked that the education system in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is heading towards collapse and that the province has put its educational priorities on the back burner.
According to private a TV channel, the Peshawar High Court heard a case regarding the non-payment of scholarship funds to students of the University of Peshawar.
The counsel for the petitioner said that the students were still not receiving scholarships despite the court’s orders.
The Assistant Registrar of the University of Peshawar requested the court to grant some time to resolve the issue, saying that the university was facing a deficit of more than Rs2 billion and that salaries were paid on the 16th of last month.
The Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court remarked that the province’s education system was heading towards collapse, saying that the province had failed to manage an old university, had pushed educational priorities into the background, university land was being rented out at throwaway prices, departments at the university were being closed, and students were losing interest.
The court ordered the university administration to resolve the students’ issue, issued a notice to the Higher Education Commission (HEC), and adjourned the hearing.
