Web desk: The federal government has announced an increase in petrol and high-speed diesel prices, effective from midnight on October 1. The revision will remain in effect for the next two weeks until October 15.
According to the Finance Ministry notification, petrol has been raised by Rs 4.07 per litre, taking the price from Rs 264.61 to Rs 268.68. High-speed diesel has also increased by Rs 4.04 per litre, moving from Rs 272.77 to Rs 276.81. These changes follow recommendations from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and relevant government ministries.
Petrol is the primary fuel for motorcycles, rickshaws, and small vehicles, making the hike particularly challenging for middle- and lower-income households. Diesel, which powers trucks, buses, trains, and agricultural machinery such as tractors and tube wells, is widely used in transport and farming. Its increased cost is expected to push up prices of essential goods, including vegetables and other food items.
Filling stations nationwide have already implemented the new rates. The rise in fuel prices is likely to affect commuting, freight transport, and production costs, with broader implications for inflation and the economy.
Earlier, on September 15, kerosene oil prices were increased by Rs 3.15 per litre, bringing the cost to Rs 179.96 per litre.
The government conducts a review and adjustment of petroleum product prices every 15 days, taking into account global market trends and domestic economic factors.
