The meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Apple’s Chief Executive Officer is expected to take place during the prime minister’s upcoming visit to the United States. Discussions will focus on starting the manufacturing or assembly of Apple mobile phones in Pakistan.
According to the report, during a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology, the Chief Executive Officer of the Engineering Development Board said that the government was making efforts to bring Apple to Pakistan and that the prime minister would meet the Apple CEO in the United States.
According to him, 37 companies are currently manufacturing mobile phones in Pakistan, and more than 35 million mobile phones have been produced so far.
The chairman of the standing committee said that manufacturing mobile phones in Pakistan was a positive development; however, there was a need to increase local production.
He said that mobile phones manufactured in Pakistan should be affordable and of good quality, adding that the country now needs 4G and 5G phones instead of 3G devices.
The committee chairman said that the country’s vision should be “Smartphone for All.” According to the IT secretary, 200 million users are currently using mobile phones in Pakistan.
Meanwhile, the committee chairman said that people’s phones are snatched in Karachi every six months, forcing them to purchase new phones.
