Kabul: Afghan media reported that the Taliban carried out public floggings of 11 individuals on Monday after the Taliban-run Supreme Court confirmed their sentences for smuggling drugs and alcohol.

Court confirms sentences

According to a statement issued by the court, the convicted individuals were found guilty of trafficking narcotic pills, methamphetamine, alcohol and hashish. Each received between 10 and 30 lashes and prison terms ranging from seven months to three years.

Rising trend of corporal punishment

Afghan media, citing data compiled from Supreme Court statements, said the use of corporal punishments has increased sharply over the past three months. At least 346 people faced public floggings during this period.

International concerns

The United Nations and other international organisations have repeatedly called on the Taliban to end corporal punishments, warning that such measures violate international human rights standards.

The floggings underscore the ongoing challenges facing Afghanistan as the Taliban enforce strict interpretations of law, drawing criticism from global human rights groups.
