Dhaka: Bangladesh suspended visa services for Indian citizens at its High Commission in Delhi and the Agartala border crossing point, following protests over the assassination of Bangladeshi student activist-turned-politician Sheikh Osman Hadi.

Protests erupt after the assassination

The move comes after Hadi’s killing sparked widespread demonstrations across Bangladesh, with protesters chanting anti-India slogans and demanding accountability. Authorities said the suspension of visa services is a temporary measure in response to the heightened tensions.

Diplomatic and border impact

Officials confirmed that both the Delhi High Commission and the Agartala border crossing will halt processing of Indian visa applications until further notice. The decision affects both diplomatic and commercial travel, as well as routine consular services.

Calls for calm

Bangladesh government officials urged citizens and demonstrators to maintain peace and warned against actions that could escalate tensions with India. The authorities stressed that diplomatic channels remain open and that the suspension is aimed at ensuring security and public order.

The incident could strain relations between the two neighbouring countries, which have historically shared complex political and economic ties.
