Marcos Llorente, a member of Spain’s World Cup-winning team, has unexpectedly announced his retirement from the national team at the age of 31.
According to private TV channel Express News, Marcos said in a statement posted on social media that after lengthy consideration, he had decided to end his journey with the national team.
He said he knew he was still young and could continue playing for several more years in the Spain jersey, but this was his personal decision, which he had made after careful consideration.
He said that whether he was selected for the World Cup or not, and whether Spain won the World Cup or not, he had already decided to retire from the national team.
Marcos ended his international career after making 27 appearances. He started two matches in the group stage and later also came on for a few minutes in the semi-final against France.
Alongside a picture from the World Cup, Marcos said in his message that he would always remember all the moments he spent with the national team, particularly the past 52 days, which were extremely special for him, when an outstanding team fought until the very end to take Spain to the highest position in the world.
Marcos began his football career with Real Madrid and joined the city’s other team, Atlético Madrid, in 2019. His club-level honours include two Champions League titles and one La Liga title.
