Web Desk: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reaffirmed its refusal to play India Pakistan match in a scheduled T20 World Cup match in Colombo on Feb. 15, making clear to the International Cricket Council (ICC) that the decision follows directives from the Pakistani government.
Local media reported that the PCB has formally conveyed its position to the ICC, stressing that any final decision on participation in the high-profile match will rest with the government.
The stance was communicated during a meeting between ICC Deputy Chairman Imran Khwaja and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, according to sources familiar with the discussions. Khwaja assured Naqvi that Pakistan’s position would be presented to ICC board members.
Officials said representatives from the Sri Lanka Cricket Board and the Emirates Cricket Board, including Mubashir Usmani, joined the talks virtually.
During the meeting, Sri Lanka and the Emirates urged Pakistan to reconsider its refusal to play India, highlighting scheduling and tournament concerns.
However, the PCB maintained its position. Sources said Naqvi may meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in the next one or two days if required, as Islamabad prepares to present its conditions to the visiting ICC delegation.
Notably, the PCB did not formally invite the ICC delegation to Pakistan. Officials said the delegation decided independently to travel to Islamabad.
Separately, officials said the PCB would issue clear instructions to players regarding on-field conduct during any potential match against India, including protocols related to handshakes.
The Pakistan-India cricket rivalry is among the most politically sensitive in global sport, and matches between the two sides are often shaped by diplomatic considerations rather than purely sporting factors.
Earlier, Naqvi met Bangladesh Cricket Board President Aminul Islam at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. The two discussed cricket-related matters and regional cooperation, according to the PCB.
Pakistan Super League Chief Executive Salman Naseer and adviser to the PCB chairman Aamir Mir were also present. Aminul Islam thanked Pakistan for its support, officials said.
The developments come as the ICC works to finalise the T20 World Cup schedule amid growing uncertainty over key fixtures involving Pakistan and India.
