Web Desk: Peshawar’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system is set for a major expansion as 25 of 52 newly purchased buses have arrived in the city, with the remaining vehicles expected to join the fleet soon.
According to TransPeshawar, the addition of all 52 buses will increase the BRT fleet to 296 vehicles, strengthening the city’s public transport network and expanding its capacity to serve growing passenger demand.
The latest addition is expected to improve services along the main BRT corridor as well as feeder routes, while reducing waiting times for commuters.
The expanded fleet could provide relief to thousands of residents who rely on public transport for daily travel related to work, education, business and medical needs.
Moreover, improved bus availability could help passengers save both time and money by providing a more reliable alternative to private vehicles and other forms of transport.
For a rapidly growing city such as Peshawar, dependable public transportation remains particularly important for students, workers, women and low-income households.
Meanwhile, authorities have introduced several measures aimed at improving the wider BRT system.
These include new hybrid buses, a dedicated Pink Bus service for women, a new depot in Hayatabad and a solar energy project at the Chamkani depot.
The Pink Bus service is intended to provide women with a safer and more comfortable travel option, while the additional buses are expected to ease congestion during peak hours and increase the system’s overall capacity.
The developments also highlight the importance of combining security and administrative priorities with improvements in everyday public services.
Although debate over administrative priorities has intensified following the emergency in the province, the BRT bus procurement project began before the emergency was imposed.
The immediate challenge now is to ensure that all newly purchased buses enter service on schedule, availability improves across routes and commuters experience tangible benefits from the expansion.
Ultimately, the effectiveness of any administration is measured not only by major policy decisions but also by whether residents can access safe, reliable and affordable services in their daily lives.
