The name Hangor is a symbol of courage, skill and professional excellence in Pakistan’s naval history
Pakistan Navy’s first Hangor-class submarine, PNS/M Hangor, is advancing towards Pakistan’s coastline. This emerging sight in the vast Arabian Sea is not merely the arrival of a submarine but a new symbol of Pakistan’s naval strength, defence confidence and modern military capabilities.
Today, an important chapter is being written in Pakistan’s maritime history. Upon joining the Pakistan Navy fleet, this submarine will not only further strengthen the country’s maritime defense but will also play an important role in regional balance of power and maritime security.
The name Hangor is a symbol of courage, skill and professional excellence in Pakistan’s naval history. During the 1971 Pakistan-India war, the Pakistan Navy submarine Hangor made history by sinking the Indian Navy warship Khukri, while also inflicting severe damage on another warship, Kirpan. Continuing this historic and proud legacy, the new Hangor-class submarines have been given the same name.
Built in China, this modern submarine is equipped with the latest combat systems, sensors, sonar, radar and weapons. It features advanced stealth technology, enabling it to operate effectively while remaining hidden from enemy detection. Moreover, the submarine is capable of carrying long-range torpedoes and cruise missiles.
A prominent feature of PNS/M Hangor is its Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, which allows it to remain submerged for extended periods while carrying out operations.
Arriving at Karachi’s coast today, the new Hangor is both the custodian of the traditions of its historic predecessor and an answer to the future requirements of naval warfare. Hangor is not just a name; it is a symbol of Pakistan’s maritime power, national resolve and defense capability. It was a source of fear for the enemy in the past and today continues to signify Pakistan’s dominance at sea.
The modern Hangor-class submarines are equipped with advanced technology, including a stealthy design, and the ability to conduct long-duration underwater operations.
