Nawaz Sharif returns to Pakistan after four years
Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Muslim League (N) leader Nawaz Sharif returned to Pakistan on October 21, 2023, after residing in London for four years. At the time of his return, it was widely stated that he had come back with the aim of becoming Pakistan’s prime minister for the fourth time.
Coalition government formed after 2024 elections
When the general elections were held on February 8, 2024 the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) failed to secure a clear majority against expectations. Following this, Nawaz Sharif assigned Shehbaz Sharif the task of holding consultations with various political parties to form a coalition government.
After succeeding in this effort, Nawaz Sharif chose not to become prime minister himself and instead considered his younger brother suitable for the responsibility. As a result, Shehbaz Sharif was elected prime minister, while Nawaz Sharif appeared largely distant from active national politics and parliamentary affairs.
In the February 8, 2024 general elections, Nawaz Sharif defeated PTI leader Dr. Yasmin Rashid and was elected as a Member of the National Assembly from Lahore’s NA-130 constituency. However, he was not seen attending National Assembly sessions frequently.
