Kerry Katona has spoken honestly about the painful memories from her early years. The star revealed that some of the things she experienced as a child were so disturbing she “can’t repeat” them.
The 44-year-old appeared on Paul Brunson’s podcast We Need To Talk, where she opened up about her life before fame. Speaking to the relationship expert, Kerry described moments from her childhood that she still finds difficult to process today.
Early Life and Struggles
Kerry Katona grew up facing many challenges. On the podcast, she explained that violence and fear were a regular part of her home life. She recalled how her mother’s partner at the time created an atmosphere that left her feeling unsafe. Kerry admitted that she had to act as if everything was normal, even when situations at home were far from ordinary.
She remembered being just eight years old and trying to take care of herself while her mother was away for days. She described eating little more than ketchup sandwiches as she managed alone. These early years, she explained, left her with scars that still affect her.

Life Before Fame
Although she later found success, Kerry explained that her dreams of being in the public eye started very young. She always believed she was destined for fame. She began modelling as a child, and by her teenage years, she was already considering glamour work.
During the podcast, Kerry recalled how her mother had once taken topless pictures of her portfolio to send to a newspaper. She admitted that she wanted recognition and believed that being famous would give her life meaning. Despite the difficult home environment, she carried with her a natural ability to perform and entertain.
Atomic Kitten and Sudden Success
In 1998, Kerry Katona became one of the founding members of the pop group Atomic Kitten. The group enjoyed huge success, but Kerry left in 2001, just before their single Whole Again reached number one.
She explained that she enjoyed the early stages of her career, performing live and interacting with fans. However, she also admitted that fame was not what she expected. She said the pressure of being in the spotlight was intense, and at times she felt singled out by the media.
After leaving the band, Kerry chose to focus on her family life. She became a mother and bought her mum a home. She also moved to Ireland, making a conscious choice to step away from the height of fame.
Painful Memories
While her music career was significant, the most emotional parts of the interview were when Kerry spoke about her childhood. She shared one memory of her mother being attacked and held at gunpoint. She recalled the family having to go into hiding afterward, even changing appearances to stay safe.
Despite the trauma, Kerry said she did not resent her mother. She explained that her mum was her best friend, and she believed the experiences made her stronger. She added that her ability to lift the mood in a room comes from surviving those difficult times.
