Govt to offer interest-free home loans

The Punjab government has officially begun implementing the “Apni Chhat Apna Ghar” programme after announcing interest-free loans to help low-income and homeless families secure permanent housing. Under the scheme, eligible applicants can receive interest-free loans ranging from PKR 500,000 to PKR 1.5 million for building new homes, repairing dilapidated houses, constructing roofs, or expanding existing homes.

To qualify, applicants must own the land or plot on which the house will be built or renovated. According to the government’s eligibility criteria, owners of plots up to 5 marlas in urban areas and 10 marlas in rural areas can apply.

Under the programme, eligible applicants can obtain up to PKR 1.5 million for the construction of a new home. Those seeking to repair damaged houses, build a new roof, or improve their existing residence can receive loans ranging from PKR 500,000 to PKR 1 million.

Officials said the repayment period has been set at five to seven years to reduce the financial burden on beneficiaries. Borrowers will also enjoy a three-month grace period during which no installments will be due. After that, repayments can be made through monthly installments of approximately PKR 14,000.

The Punjab government said it will bear the entire markup on the loans, ensuring that beneficiaries receive financing completely free of interest. The initiative aims to provide affordable financial support to low-income families for constructing or renovating their homes.

Authorities said the programme will be implemented across all districts of Punjab, with applications being scrutinized under a transparent process before loans are approved.

Interested applicants can submit their applications through the Punjab government’s online portal acag.punjab.gov.pk. For further information, the government has established a helpline at 0800-09100, while applicants may also contact their respective Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) Office for assistance.

According to the Punjab government, the programme aims to provide dignified housing for low-income and homeless families, rehabilitate unsafe homes, and offer interest-free financial assistance so that more deserving people can turn their dream of homeownership into reality.
