Senator Rana Sanaullah, Adviser to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Political Affairs and a member of the 11-member Advisory Council for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has said that the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa must be brought to a level within three to six months where people can enjoy peace, live freely, conduct business, and move around without fear. He said that if the situation did not improve, an emergency could be imposed even 10 times if necessary. Whoever is in power, including the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), must stand with the national narrative against terrorism.
Speaking to a private television channel, Rana Sanaullah said they were hopeful that the system would work. He said the Advisory Council would support the security forces and the armed forces. In areas cleared of terrorists by the military, the administration would have to maintain control.
He said that whoever the assembly elected as the Leader of the House would have to agree on the fight against terrorism. If the Leader of the House did not agree on counterterrorism, matters could not move forward. Whether PTI or any other party was in power, it would have to stand with the national narrative against terrorism.
Rana Sanaullah said the imposition of governor’s rule and an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa should not be remembered as a Black Day or a Day of Deliverance. He said the real Day of Deliverance would come when terrorism was brought under control and tribute was paid to the martyrs.
He said governor’s rule and the emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had been imposed under circumstances in which security personnel were sacrificing their lives, terrorists were not being eliminated, and the provincial government was playing no role in ending terrorism. He said they were moving forward by excluding the role of the PTI provincial government to eliminate terrorism from the province.
Rana Sanaullah said that on October 12, an unconstitutional era had been imposed on Pakistan, martial law had been enforced, and an elected government had been dismissed. He said governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had been imposed under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution.
He said that when governor’s rule was imposed during Shehbaz Sharif’s government in Punjab, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had not prioritised personal interests over the national interest.
The reasons for imposing governor’s rule against the PML-N government had not been valid. However, the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was such that people had difficulty leaving their homes after sunset.
Senator Rana Sanaullah said they had estimated that PTI would not be able to gather more than 10,000 to 12,000 people, and that was what happened. However, this time, there were fears that some individuals who had received training in Afghanistan and were involved in terrorism in Pakistan might join the march and carry out an attack, potentially causing bloodshed. Emergency measures were taken for this reason.
He said that the entire PTI leadership had been sidelined, and a 32-year-old man had been given the authority to make all decisions. No PTI leader raised a slogan or staged a protest against governor’s rule, he said, adding that doing so required courage. He said they had been 90 per cent certain that there would be no reaction from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
