Web Desk: Call of Duty is attempting to regain momentum with its latest instalment, Modern Warfare 4, after a difficult year that saw the long-running blockbuster lose ground in the US sales rankings and face growing competition from rival shooters.

Activision is responding with a major promotional campaign and changes aimed at addressing complaints from players, while also preparing to release the game only weeks before Grand Theft Auto 6, one of the most anticipated titles in the gaming industry.

The timing presents a major test for the franchise as publishers compete for players’ limited time and entertainment budgets.

Call of Duty had remained near the top of US video game sales charts for much of the past decade. However, its 2025 release, Black Ops 7, fell to seventh place in the American market, according to Circana data.

The title also ranked eighth among the UK’s best-selling games, according to industry data.

The game’s availability through Xbox Game Pass is believed to have affected sales, while established rival Battlefield 6 and surprise hit Arc Raiders added further pressure.

At the same time, sections of the Call of Duty community criticised the use of cartoon-inspired character skins and other pop-culture collaborations in multiplayer modes.

Activision’s chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl acknowledged that the franchise fell short of expectations last year and said the company responded by listening more closely to players.

Modern Warfare 4 allows players to disable some of the cosmetic features that had generated criticism, while Activision is positioning the new title as a return to the series’ established strengths.

The company has also mounted an expansive marketing campaign designed to place Call of Duty at the center of popular culture.

In London, Activision transformed part of Shoreditch into a South Korean-style street featuring restaurants and convenience stores inspired by the new game’s setting. The title’s storyline involves a fictional North Korean invasion, a plot choice that has already generated mixed reactions.

Activision has pursued similar promotional efforts in Los Angeles and elsewhere.

The campaign has included appearances by actor Inde Navarrette at Fanatics Fest, a partnership with the Baller League and a collaboration with YouTube star MrBeast to promote the game’s new DMZ multiplayer mode.

Bahl said such partnerships are intended to reinforce the franchise’s scale and cultural influence while reaching audiences beyond its traditional gaming base.

Modern Warfare 4 will arrive shortly before Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6, creating an unusual release-window clash between two of the industry’s biggest franchises.

Rather than viewing GTA 6 solely as a threat, Activision believes its arrival could bring more people back to consoles and gaming.

Bahl described the two titles as among the year’s biggest releases but argued that they offer sufficiently different experiences to coexist.

GTA 6 will initially launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox consoles, while its multiplayer component will not be available at release. Activision believes those differences could help Call of Duty retain players even as attention shifts toward Rockstar’s blockbuster.

Call of Duty’s price in Britain is around £70, but Activision is emphasizing the game’s longer-term appeal, particularly its social features.

Bahl said many players return not simply for combat but because their friends are playing, making the game’s online community a central part of its appeal.

Beyond multiplayer, Activision is also looking to repair confidence in the franchise’s single-player campaigns.

Although the cinematic story modes are generally not the main reason players purchase Call of Duty, they remain an important part of the series and have helped create some of its most recognizable characters.

Modern Warfare 4 has been promoted as the conclusion of the storyline surrounding Capt. John Price, the popular character played by British actor Barry Sloane.

Sloane said the response from fans had given him confidence rather than pressure, while María Elisa Camargo, who returns as cartel leader Valeria Garza, acknowledged that the series’ audience has high expectations.

Actor Mads Mikkelsen joins the cast as the mysterious enemy known as The Archer.

For Mikkelsen, at least one member of his family is certain to experience the new campaign: his son, whom he expects will once again try to defeat his character.

With competition intensifying and GTA 6 approaching, Modern Warfare 4 represents more than another annual release for Activision.

The company is betting that changes requested by its community, a renewed focus on the franchise’s core identity and an aggressive marketing campaign can bring players back.

The response to the new title could determine whether Call of Duty can restore its position among the industry’s dominant franchises after a year in which its long-standing grip on the market weakened.
