Investigations into the martyrdom of four police personnel, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Karak district have brought to light the possibility that terrorists were provided with advance information about police movements. Initial reports suggest that the suspected facilitators may have political affiliations with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
According to Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) sources, investigators are examining initial information suggesting that details about police personnel moving through the area were passed on to terrorists through local facilitators.
Initial reports have also raised suspicions that the individuals under investigation may be affiliated with PTI. According to sources, investigators are also reviewing reports that these individuals had attended rallies organised by PTI Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Shahid Khattak in the past.
Investigators are verifying whether the individuals who provided information about police movements had formal political ties to PTI or Shahid Khattak, or whether they were merely his voters or rally attendees.
CTD sources said evidence relating to the identities, connections and possible roles of the individuals under investigation is being examined. Further inquiries are underway to identify the suspected facilitators and verify their political affiliations.
A clearer picture of the role of local facilitators and other aspects of the incident will emerge only after the investigation is completed and the evidence becomes available.
