Web Desk: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Peshawar on Thursday for a one-day visit focused on counterterrorism, law and order and development priorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, following the imposition of emergency measures and governor’s rule in the province.
The prime minister is chairing a high-level meeting of the Apex Committee at the Governor House, where senior civil and military officials are reviewing security challenges and measures to curb terrorism and restore lasting peace.
A development package for the province is also expected to be announced during the visit, particularly for areas affected by terrorism and years of inadequate infrastructure and public services.
The meeting is being attended by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, federal and provincial ministers, senior military officials and other relevant government representatives, according to sources.
Participants are assessing the overall law and order situation across the province, with particular attention to ongoing counterterrorism operations, activities attributed to Fitna al-Khawarij and security requirements in vulnerable districts.
Moreover, the prime minister is expected to receive a detailed briefing on steps taken by security agencies and law enforcement institutions to dismantle terrorist networks, strengthen operational capabilities and improve coordination between federal and provincial authorities.
The discussions are also expected to cover strategies for responding to emerging threats and improving the effectiveness of security operations.
Governor Kundi had earlier invited the prime minister to visit Peshawar and lead a high-level meeting to address the province’s security and administrative challenges.
The visit also places the spotlight on the newly established Area Representative and Development Council, which aims to strengthen governance, promote peace and accelerate development in 12 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The council covers eight merged districts Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Kurram, Orakzai, North Waziristan, Upper South Waziristan and Lower South Waziristan as well as four southern districts: Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Lakki Marwat and Bannu.
Shehbaz Sharif is expected to meet council members and outline the federal government’s plans for the designated areas. Officials are also expected to brief him on the council’s structure, responsibilities and proposed development initiatives.
These initiatives are likely to focus on rebuilding infrastructure, expanding economic opportunities and rehabilitating communities affected by terrorism.
The government aims to combine stronger security arrangements with socioeconomic development to address longstanding challenges in the districts, particularly those facing persistent insecurity and limited public services.
Sources indicate that the prime minister may announce a comprehensive development package for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during his visit.
The proposed measures are expected to prioritise infrastructure rehabilitation, employment generation, improved public facilities and assistance for communities affected by terrorism.
The anticipated package would complement security efforts by addressing development gaps in affected areas and supporting efforts to establish sustainable peace.
