AJK Police have arrested at least 72 leaders and members of the banned Public Action Committee during the last 18 hours over allegations of disrupting peace, creating anarchy and contacts with anti-state elements.
According to a police statement, the arrested individuals face various charges, including damaging public property, delivering provocative speeches, blocking public roads, and disrupting the daily lives of citizens. The police said all actions are being carried out in accordance with the law.
The statement further said that preliminary investigations revealed that some individuals allegedly engaged in hate propaganda against state institutions during protest activities and attempted to undermine public order. Police said evidence is being collected against such individuals and legal proceedings are ongoing.
In his statement, the Inspector General (IG) of AJK Police said that peaceful protest is the constitutional and legal right of every citizen. However, he emphasized that no individual or group can be allowed to violate the law, damage public property, spread hatred, or paralyze the daily lives of citizens. He added that indiscriminate action would be taken against anyone taking the law into their own hands.
The police have appealed to citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and immediately report any suspicious activity or inflammatory material to the nearest police station or district administration.
The IG Police further clarified that all available resources are being utilized to maintain law and order, protect the lives and property of citizens, and ensure the rule of law in the state. He reiterated that strict action against any illegal activity will continue.
