'Youm-e-Istehsal Kashmir'

On the completion of seven years since Modi’s government dealt another blow to the rights of Kashmiris, “’Youm-e-Istehsal Kashmir’” is being observed today across Pakistan and around the world.

This day, August 5, is observed in Pakistan and around the world as “Kashmir Exploitation Day” to express solidarity with Kashmiris. The day recalls India’s decision in 2019 to revoke the special constitutional status of Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

On August 5, 2019, the Indian government dealt another blow to the rights of Kashmiris by abolishing Articles 370 and 35-A of the Constitution and revoking Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. Under the decision, the state was divided into two federally administered territories, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, while strict restrictions were imposed.

Under Article 370, occupied Kashmir had its own constitution, separate flag, and special powers over internal affairs, while Article 35-A provided special rights to the local population.

To suppress public protests against the decision, a curfew was imposed in the occupied valley immediately after the August 5, 2019 decision, and atrocities against Kashmiris intensified. The communication system was suspended, thousands of additional troops were deployed, and several Kashmiri political leaders were also detained.

Pakistan declared the Indian action illegal and, in protest, downgraded diplomatic relations. It also took steps to highlight the Kashmir issue at all international forums. Pakistan observes August 5 every year as “Kashmir Exploitation Day” to express solidarity with the Kashmiri people.
