The targeted petrol subsidy programme announced by the federal government for owners of motorcycles, three-wheelers and small cars will come into effect tonight in Islamabad after midnight.
Under the programme, owners of two-wheelers will receive petrol relief on 20 litres, while owners of vehicles up to 800cc will get relief on 30 litres of petrol.
Federal Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja announced the programme at a press conference alongside Information Minister Atta Tarar and Ali Pervez Malik.
She said the initiative was launched on the prime minister’s directives to provide relief to citizens affected by high petrol prices.
Shaza said the government had designed the programme to ensure that the maximum number of people could benefit from the targeted subsidy.
The petrol relief programme will be implemented in two phases, with citizens first required to register themselves.
Applicants will have to send their CNIC number from the SIM registered against their identity card. They will then provide details of their motorcycle or vehicle registration.
The applicant will also have to provide details of the city or province where the vehicle is registered. The vehicle’s registration date and relevant documents will also be required.
Once registered, citizens will not need to repeat the process.
The minister said incomplete information would be communicated to applicants through a message.
After registration, citizens seeking petrol relief will have to send “TOK” to 9771 when they go to purchase petrol.
Shaza Fatima also warned citizens against fraud linked to the subsidy programme.
She said the government would not charge any registration fee or ask for money through messages.
Citizens were advised not to share their CNIC numbers or personal information with anyone.
The minister said the government would not ask citizens for additional data or charges for the petrol relief programme.
