Renowned Pakistani actor and producer Humayun Saeed has urged the government to support the establishment of a local streaming platform to introduce Pakistani dramas and films to international audiences.
In a recent interview, Saeed praised the quality of Pakistani dramas, saying they have a distinct identity based on their stories, dialogues and the unique style of the Urdu language.
He said Pakistani dramas have the potential to secure a place on international streaming platforms, particularly Netflix.
The actor said Pakistan should establish its own over-the-top (OTT) platform rather than relying solely on foreign platforms. Such a platform would provide local filmmakers, actors and producers with greater opportunities to showcase their talent.
Citing India as an example, he said local streaming platforms there first established their presence before attracting the attention of global platforms.
Saeed said establishing a similar platform in Pakistan could also encourage the development of new stories and high-quality digital productions.
He also discussed the role of social media in introducing new actors to the entertainment industry.
The actor said TikTok and other digital platforms had provided emerging talent with opportunities to showcase their abilities. However, he stressed that popularity on social media was not a complete measure of an actor’s actual acting skills.
Citing actress Hania Aamir as an example, Saeed said he had noticed her on Dubsmash, after which she was given an opportunity to work in a drama.
