Web Desk: A fresh controversy has emerged over Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s social media operations after remarks attributed to PTI Senator Mushaal Yousafzai raised questions about whether the party paid YouTubers to promote its political narrative.
The remarks, attributed to Yousafzai, alleged that journalist and YouTuber Siddique Jan was not a journalist and that PTI paid him to develop content supporting the party’s narrative.
The claims have triggered a wider debate over the relationship between political parties, digital content creators and paid political messaging.
The controversy has also prompted questions about how PTI’s political messaging is produced and promoted across social media platforms.
Supporters of the party have frequently used YouTube and other digital platforms to communicate political positions and challenge mainstream media narratives. However, allegations that content creators were financially compensated to promote a particular political line have raised questions about the distinction between independent commentary and political publicity.
Social media users have called for greater clarity over the nature of any payments, their sources and the purpose for which they were made.
At the same time, the claims remain allegations unless supported by documentary evidence, financial records or other independently verifiable material.
The controversy has also expanded into questions about the use of public resources during PTI’s extended tenure in power in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
