Former Pakistan cricket team captain and renowned fast bowler Wasim Akram has advised people over the age of 50 to reduce their mobile phone usage so they can focus on spending quality time with their loved ones and adopting a healthy lifestyle.
In a video shared on Instagram, the photo- and video-sharing platform, the former cricketer delivered a special message for people in his age group.
In his message, he outlined several guidelines he had developed regarding the responsible use of mobile phones, WhatsApp and social media.
Addressing people over the age of 50, Wasim Akram advised them to avoid unnecessarily sending different messages and content to others every day, as this could annoy people, fill up their phones’ storage and force them to go through unwanted messages.
Expressing frustration over unnecessary messages, particularly “Good Morning” and “Good Night” messages, he said that people’s ability to maintain attention was declining. He also advised against sending long videos.
Wasim Akram said, “Who would want to watch a half-hour-long video?” He added that it did not matter how important a video was; people would not watch it. Therefore, he advised people not to send videos longer than two minutes.
He said that those who followed his advice would thank him later.
The former captain acknowledged that using mobile phones day and night might be normal for Generation Alpha and Generation Z because they had grown up in the digital age. However, he said older people did not necessarily need to remain available on their mobile phones all the time.
Sharing his own experience, the former cricketer said that he, too, used to spend time on his mobile phone, share reels and reply to messages, but he kept his usage within certain limits.
Meanwhile, Wasim Akram’s Australian-born wife, Shaniera Akram, has released a video in response to the aforementioned video.
