Web Desk: Punjab authorities have decided to introduce a QR-based panic button system across public transport vehicles, including buses, vans, rickshaws and taxis, in a move aimed at improving passenger security and strengthening emergency response capabilities.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA), will allow commuters to verify vehicle details, share travel information with family members and quickly alert police in emergencies.
According to a spokesperson for the Punjab Safe Cities Authority, passengers will be able to obtain and use the QR panic button free of charge through the Public Safety App and the Safe Cities website.
Once scanned, the QR code will provide key information about the vehicle, including registration details, ownership records and driver credentials. Authorities said the feature is designed to help passengers verify the authenticity of public transport services before and during their journey.
In addition, commuters will be able to share trip details with family members at the start of their travel, creating an additional layer of security and real-time awareness.
The system integrates several safety functions, including emergency calling, live location sharing, vehicle verification and direct police response services.
If a passenger encounters a security threat or emergency situation, the panic button can be activated to transmit relevant information and location data to authorities, enabling a faster response from nearby police units.
Authorities believe the technology will help improve incident reporting and reduce response times across the province’s transport network.
Punjab Inspector General of Police Dr. Usman Anwar said protecting the lives and property of citizens remains the police force’s highest priority.
Meanwhile, Managing Director of the Punjab Safe Cities Authority Ahsan Younas said the organization continues to deploy modern surveillance technologies and rapid-response systems to strengthen public safety and improve security services for commuters.
The latest initiative forms part of broader efforts by provincial authorities to integrate technology into law enforcement and public safety operations.
Officials expressed confidence that the QR panic button system will enhance transparency in public transport, increase passenger confidence and provide authorities with another tool to respond swiftly to emergencies across Punjab.
