NISSHIN: China’s women’s cricket campaign at the Asian Games ended abruptly on Thursday after their quarterfinal against Bangladesh was abandoned without a ball being bowled because of waterlogged conditions.
Persistent rain left the outfield at Korogi Sports Park unplayable, preventing even the toss from taking place.
Under the Asian Games’ knockout regulations, an abandoned match must produce a winner. The team with the higher International Cricket Council (ICC) T20I ranking advances in such a situation.
Bangladesh, ranked 10th in the ICC women’s T20I rankings, therefore progressed to the semifinals, while 36th-ranked China were eliminated.
China had secured their place in the quarterfinals after beating Nepal by five wickets in a qualifying match in May.
The result ended China’s third appearance in women’s cricket at the Asian Games, following their participation in the 2010 and 2014 editions.
Bangladesh will play their semifinal on Sept. 20 against the winner of the quarterfinal between India and hosts Japan.
Meanwhile, Pakistan advanced to the semifinals of the 2026 Asian Games women’s cricket competition after beating Thailand by three wickets in the second quarterfinal at Korogi Sports Park on Thursday.
The rain-affected match was reduced to 11 overs per side after persistent rain delayed the toss.
Put in to bat, Thailand posted 91-4 from their 11 overs, with wicketkeeper-batter Nannapat Koncharoenkai top-scoring with a fine 49 from 38 balls, including seven fours.
