During the COVID-19 pandemic, the trend of working from home grew rapidly. Initially, it was believed that significant savings would be achieved by reducing expenses on commuting, fuel, office attire, and eating out. However, the situation that has emerged five years later appears to be different.
According to a report by foreign media, experts say that the electricity bills of people working from home have increased significantly, as laptops, monitors, Wi-Fi routers, and air conditioners often run for eight to nine hours a day.
Due to frequent online meetings, many workers have also had to subscribe to higher-speed internet packages.
The report stated that the work-from-home trend has also affected the furniture market. Initially, many people managed to work from dining tables or sofas, but later they had to spend thousands of rupees on items such as comfortable chairs, desks, monitor stands, and improved lighting.
According to the report, these expenses are necessary investments for health and improved productivity, as unsuitable furniture can lead to back, neck, and wrist problems.
Experts say that staying at home has also quietly increased household expenses, as people tend to consume more meals and snacks throughout the day.
The report noted that the biggest disadvantage of working from home could be its impact on career growth. Employees who remain away from the office may be overlooked for promotions, salary increases, bonuses, and important projects, while new employees may lose opportunities to learn from senior colleagues.
Health experts have warned that poor-quality workstations are contributing to an increase in issues such as back, neck, and shoulder pain, weight gain, eye strain, headaches, and sleep problems.
They added that reduced social interaction due to working from home may also contribute to increased stress, anxiety, fatigue, and mental health issues, particularly among younger employees.
On the other hand, working from home also creates cybersecurity risks. If a laptop is lost, stolen, or hacked, the damage is not limited to the device itself; an organization’s sensitive data, login credentials, and business systems may also be exposed, causing financial and operational losses.
The report highlighted that working from home also offers several benefits, including avoiding daily commutes, saving time, reducing exposure to air pollution, spending less on office clothing, and allowing people to spend more time with children or pets.
Experts say that while working from home can certainly provide savings, those savings become less significant when expenses related to electricity, internet, furniture, health, career development, and cybersecurity are taken into account.
