Karachi: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday inaugurated the upgradation of Karachi Cantt Railway Station during a two-day visit to the city, highlighting major improvements in passenger facilities and rail operations.
Station Overhaul Showcased
Officials briefed the prime minister on the extensive renovation of the station, widely regarded as Karachi’s secondary railway hub. The revamped facility now features redesigned waiting areas, drawing rooms and an automated ticketing system. According to railway authorities, the Shalimar Express has also been fully restored and relaunched as a modernized train.
Outsourced Services and Modern Amenities
The prime minister noted that outsourcing certain services had significantly improved overall performance. Cleaning and maintenance of the station have been assigned to Karachi Waste Management, which has introduced new standards of sanitation.
Shehbaz Sharif said the upgraded first-class and economy-class areas were “worth seeing,” adding that the improvements reflected the government’s focus on enhancing passenger comfort.
Rail System Set for Modernization
While speaking to reporters, the prime minister said Pakistan Railways had long required structural reforms, but the system was now “back on track.” He praised the federal railways minister and his team for what he called their dedicated efforts to modernize the network.
He added that Karachi, known as the “city of lights,” played a central role in the transformation. Pakistan Railways, he said, was moving steadily toward a more efficient and modern transport system.
Further upgrades are expected in the coming months as part of the government’s broader plan to overhaul national rail infrastructure.
